The North West Land Trust, the largest Aboriginal landholder in New South Wales aside from national parks, is a coalition comprising 17 Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALCs) situated in the North West region of New South Wales, Australia. In 2014, the Land Trust achieved the successful reclamation of ownership for four rural properties, which had long been absent from their communities.
The constituent LALCs of the Land Trust encompass Baradine, Brewarrina, Cobar, Collarenebri, Coonamble, Goodooga, Lightning Ridge, Moree, Mungindi, Murrawari, Narrabri, Nulla Nulla, Pilliga, Toomelah, Walgett, Wee Waa, and Weilmoringle.
Following the restoration of these properties—Kaituna and Uno near Coonamble and Nulty Springs north of Bourke—the Trust has actively leased them for commercial farming purposes. Committed to securing and advancing the rights of Aboriginal people in accessing and managing their traditional lands, the North West Land Trust collaborates with government and industry partners. The overarching goal is to generate economic opportunities for Aboriginal communities in the region, all while preserving the Cultural & Heritage and environmental values of the land.
“ The North West Land Trust envisions a thriving future for Aboriginal communities in the North West region of New South Wales. As custodians of the largest Aboriginal landholding in New South Wales, we are committed to responsible land management, sustainable economic development, and preserving the rich cultural and environmental heritage of our traditional lands."
We pay our respects to the Traditional Owners of the lands where we work as well as across the lands we travel through. We also acknowledge our Elders past, present and emerging.
